Tafel to disperse breeding stock at Keeneland November sale

Email

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Jim Tafel, owner and breeder of 2007 Kentucky Derby winner and 2006 champion juvenile Street Sense and 1998 champion 3-year-old filly Banshee Breeze, will disperse his breeding stock at the Nov. 6-16 Keeneland November sale in Lexington.

Tafel will retain all of his yearlings and current foals to race, according to a release from Mill Ridge Farm in Lexington, one of two consignors who will handle the November dispersal. The other consignor is Darby Dan Farm, also in Lexington.

In addition to Street Sense and Banshee Breeze (whom he owned in partnership with Jayeff B Stables), Tafel also bred and raced graded winner Til Forbid

He purchased and raced Grade 1 winner Vicar, multiple graded winner Coolawin, graded winner Metfield, and record-setting stakes winner Binalong.

Tafel, 88, was Kentucky breeder of the year in 2008 and ranked ninth among North American owners in 2007 when his stable, led by Street Sense, earned more than $3.6 million.

Perhaps Mr. Tafel will use the monies to get his son's auto racing team back up and running? Congrats on a great tenure as an owner and hopefully these broodmares find great homes.
