ETOBICOKE, Ontario — Longtime Ontario horse owner and philanthropist Sydney Cooper passed away Saturday at age 97 in Toronto. Under R.M.C. Stable, Cooper campaigned John the Magician, who won the 1997 Breeders’ Stakes, the anchor leg of the Canadian Triple Crown. Cooper also raced the 1999 Breeders’ runner-up, John the Drummer; Ascot Yael, who was victorious in the Grade 2 Dance Smartly in 1999; and 2012 Ontario Lassie Stakes winner Aunt Els. There will be a service for Cooper at the Beth Sholom Synagogue on Eglinton Avenue in Toronto today at 3 p.m. Daily Shiva visits will follow the interment, from 1-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.
