Sweet August Moon has been retired and will be shipped to Kentucky to be bred to Smart Strike.

Sweet August Moon, a four-time stakes winner in a 21-race career, was scheduled to leave Santa Anita on Saturday afternoon for retirement at Lane’s End Farm in Kentucky.

Sweet August Moon is expected to be bred to Smart Strike this year.

Owned by Pete Parrella and Shirley MacPherson and trained by Brian Koriner, Sweet August Moon, 6, made her final start in the Grade 1 Santa Monica Stakes on Jan. 30, finishing third behind Switch.

Last year, Sweet August Moon won 2 of 9 starts, with wins in the Grade 2 A Gleam Handicap at Hollywood Park and Grade 3 Rancho Bernardo Handicap at Del Mar as highlights. In 2009, she won consecutive stakes at Santa Anita in the Honest Lady Stakes and Grade 3 Las Flores Handicap.

By Malibu Moon, Sweet August Moon won at distances ranging from 5 1/2 to seven furlongs.
