ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Jockey Chantal Sutherland swept both Grade 3 stakes for 2-year-olds on Sunday at Woodbine, taking the $251,000 Grey aboard Mine That Bird and the $275,000 Mazarine on Van Lear Rose.

Sutherland rated a keen Mine That Bird just off a slow pace along the inside in the 1 1/16-mile Grey. Bear’s Conductor led the way, while 3-5 favorite Southern Exchange was very rank in fourth on the backstretch.

Sutherland angled Mine That Bird off the rail exiting the far turn, and they overtook Bear’s Conductor in deep stretch en route to a half-length score, in a time of 1:44.45. Stimulus Plan rallied from last to nose out Red Leader for third. Southern Exchange faded to trail the six-horse field.

“Out of the gate, I think my horse got a little intimidated being on the inside, and he was sharp,” said Sutherland. “Bear’s Conductor was tough to get by, but it worked out really good.”

Mine That Bird ($14.50) banked $150,000 for the partnership of Derek Ball, Hugh Galbraith, and trainer Dave Cotey.

Van Lear Rose ($20.70) raced four-wide throughout the 1 1/16-mile Mazarine, and mowed down favored Livin Lovin in the final 70 yards to prevail by a half-length. Pacemaker Georgia Song faded to third in the 10-horse field of fillies.

“It set up really well,” said Sutherland, who won four races on the card. “I was a little wide, but there was nowhere to get in. She came off the bridle, and when I needed her, she really accelerated.”

Van Lear Rose covered the distance in 1:43.69, and earned $180,000 for Kingview Farm and trainer Catherine Day Phillips.
