Sutherland says she'll return to saddle at Del Mar

Email

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Chantal Sutherland, who announced her retirement here last summer, was at Woodbine on Thursday morning and plans to return to riding at the Del Mar meeting, which begins July 18.

“I just started dreaming about it again,” said the 37-year-old Sutherland, who is working for Del Mar’s marketing department and is here to extol the benefits of racing there.

“All of a sudden I started waking up at 4 a.m. I missed it too much; I love all the people at the racetrack.”

Sutherland last saw action at Del Mar, winning with her final two mounts on Aug. 3 and Aug. 4 of last year.

A native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Sutherland won Sovereign Awards as Canada’s outstanding apprentice rider when based at Woodbine in 2001 and 2002.

She plans to begin galloping horses regularly next month in preparation for her comeback.

Where do you guys at DRF get your "facts," anyway? 1. Sutherland "last saw action" at Woodbine, where she also announced her retirement. Not at Del Mar. 2. She also did not "win with her final two mounts" at Del Mar on Aug 3 and Aug 4. She won a race on Aug 3 at Del Mar on "Rock U Up." No wins on August 4.

I knew this would happen sooner or later when I noticed through some research that her other ventures had gone dry. Del Mar is aiming a bit too high right back. I am not a hater but I'm reasonably sure she will have an 'O fer' meet.

Nancy as much as I would like to think that she will go O'fer, she is the Del Mar Poster Girl and the DMR stewards will allow her to ride recklessly in the lane without penalty on her way to the winners circle because she works for the Del Mar Marketing Department. I know this because I witnessed it first hand as it cost me a Pick 6 on a Friday night when she impeded not once but twice, Joe Talamo with NO DQ... she will win because the stewards will allow it.
