Super Saver's stud fee to start at $20K

Kentucky Derby hero Super Saver will stand for $20,000 for his first year at stud, WinStar Farm announced Thursday.

"We've had overwhelming response since announcing Super Saver's retirement, and we felt at $20,000 he would be placed in the market to have a strong first book of mares, while also providing good value to breeders," WinStar's president and chief executive officer ,Elliott Walden, said.

A 3-year-old Maria's Mon colt, Super Saver descends from Phipps family breeding. He is a son of the A. P. Indy mare Supercharger, a full sister to Grade 1 winner Girolamo, Grade 2 winner Daydreaming, and Grade 3 winner Accelerator. She also is a full sister to She's a Winner, the dam of WinStar's top-three freshman sire, Bluegrass Cat.

Super Saver won the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes in stakes-record time at 2 before embarking on his Derby campaign at 3. In addition to his 2 1/2-length Derby victory over Ice Box, Super Saver finished second, beaten a neck by Line of David, in the Grade 2 Arkansas Derby and third in the Grade 3 Tampa Bay Derby. He earned more than $1.8 million.
