SunRay Park: Isn't He Clever dominates San Juan County Commissioners

Isn't He Clever won the San Juan County Commissioners Handicap by 16 3/4 lengths Sunday for his fifth stakes win.

Isn’t He Clever was a blowout winner of the $75,000 San Juan County Commissioners Handicap at SunRay Park in Farmington, N.M., on Sunday, leading throughout for a 16 3/4-length win.

Casa de Cambio, his uncoupled stablemate, finished second to give owners J. Kirk and Judy Robison and trainer Henry Dominguez a sweep of the race’s top two spots. The $2 exacta paid $21.40.

Isn’t He Clever ($2.20) was the 123-pound highweight off a fourth-place finish in the Grade 3 Lone Star Park Handicap. He moved to the lead soon after the start of Sunday’s race, taking the field through fractions of 24.40 seconds for the opening quarter, 48.06 for the half-mile, and 1:12.21 for six furlongs.

Isn’t He Clever increased his advantage from that point on, covering the 1 1/8 miles run around three turns in 1:49.95.

Enrique Gomez was aboard Isn’t He Clever, who picked up $45,000 for the win to push his career earnings to $542,453. Isn’t He Clever has won 7 of 15 career starts, with all of his victories coming in New Mexico. The San Jan County Commissioners was the fifth stakes win for the gelding, a 4-year-old by Smarty Jones who was bred in Kentucky by Monticule.
