Sunland tweaks racing format

Email

Sunland Park in New Mexico, which is conducting a mixed meet for Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses, on Monday announced changes to its racing format. The track plans to run all-Quarter Horse cards on Fridays, while the cards on Saturdays, Sundays, and Tuesdays will be mostly for Thoroughbreds.

The changes start Friday.

Sunland also announced that the Quarter Horse stakes scheduled for weekends will be held after the last Thoroughbred race. Sunday’s card will have four stakes, split between Quarter Horses and Thoroughbreds. The program includes a pair of stepping-stones to the meet’s biggest races. The $100,000 Riley Allison for 3-year-olds at a mile could produce starters for the Grade 3, $800,000 Sunland Park Derby, while the $65,000 El Paso Times for 3-year-old fillies could be a source of starters for the $200,000 Sunland Park Oaks. The Riley Allison drew top Arizona-bred runner Yo Y Me, who is chasing his fifth straight win while taking on a field that includes the undefeated stakes winner Underwood.
