Sunland: Skirt Alert returns

Skirt Alert brings a perfect record into the $125,000 La Coneja Handicap at Sunland Park.

A winner in her first three starts, Skirt Alert heads a field of 10 3-year-old fillies going 5 1/2 furlongs as one of the two co-highweights at 120 pounds.

But perfection aside, Skirt Alert has some hurdles here. She hasn't raced since July 31, when she rallied from far back after a slow start to easily win a stakes at Ruidoso. Trained by O.D. Jamison, Skirt Alert boasts two strong recent drills for this comeback. She's no stranger to these parts - while her last two wins both came at Ruidoso, she did win her maiden here by almost seven lengths here on April 3. Mark Villa has the call.

Desert Pride also comes into the La Coneja with a 120-pound assignment. Trained by Joel Marr, she has recency on her side. She easily won the New Mexico Cup Filly at Zia Park on Nov. 6. That race was a sprint, but she then tried a route for the first time in an overnight stakes at Zia on Nov. 28, faltering to fifth after dueling on the pace early. She moves back to what is apparently her preferred game and was an impressive allowance winner at Sunland 13 months ago. Carlos Madeira rides.

La Mamie could be the spoiler. Trained by Michael Barber, she has a ton of speed and figures to be on the pace early. She was much the best wiring allowance foes at Zia on Sept. 26 and then came back in the New Mexico Cup Filly, where she battled hard on the pace. She couldn't quite fend off Desert Pride in the final furlong but was able to hold second. Quyet Bui rides at 118 pounds.
