Sunland Park: Two maidens stand out

Email

SUNLAND PARK, N.M. - A pair of impressive maidens won on Tuesday's card, and both were bet down to favoritism.

In the fifth race, Overflight, owned by R. D. Hubbard and Constance Sczesny, made his first career start, and to the surprise of no one was an easy winner. Overflight's latest workout was a half-mile handily from the gate in 45.60 seconds.

A 3-year-old gelding by In Excess, he broke poorly Tuesday, reached the front by the far turn, and drew off to win by 12 lengths without ever being asked for his best by jockey Jorge Bourdieu. Trained by Bart Hone, Overflight ran the six furlongs in 1:08.45 and returned $3.20.

In the eighth race, stakes-placed 3-year-old filly Jackie Jan finally got a chance to run against maidens and made short work of her opponents. Jackie Jan, owned by Leslie and Pierre Amestoy Jr., had made eight starts before Tuesday's race but seven of them had been against winners and four were in stakes.

On Tuesday, Jackie Jan pulled clear on the turn and won by 13 lengths under only mild encouragement by C.J. McMahon. Jackie Jan, trained by Lorence Lucero, ran the six furlongs in 1:08.90 and paid $2.80. She had already earned $58,729 going into the race, with six seconds and a third.

* Trainer Gary Cross had Music Lover razor-sharp for her return after a 7 1/2-month layoff, and she won a classified allowance race by 6 1/2 lengths under Bourdieu. Music Lover, owned by Lewis Tuck, was timed in 1:03.31 for 5 1/2 furlongs.
