Sunland Park: That’s Who cuts back for Pepsi-Cola Stakes

Email

A turnback in distance could result in different tactics from That’s Who, a speedy front-runner who will be seeking his third career stakes win Saturday when he starts in the $110,000 Pepsi-Cola at Sunland Park.

The Pepsi-Cola is a six-furlong race for 3-year-olds bred in New Mexico. A field of 10 will go, including E Bar Way, a stakes winner at Zia Park, and Honshu City, a stakes winner at the Downs at Albuquerque.

That’s Who has used his good speed to win 4 of 7 career starts, including the $151,000 New Mexico Classic Cup Juvenile at Zia in October and the $110,000 Red Hedeman Mile at Sunland in his last start Dec.  31.

With the cutback in distance Saturday, That’s Who could find himself farther off the pace than usual. He might naturally fall into a stalking position behind Lyons Prospect, who was a wire-to-wire winner at five furlongs last out at Zia, and Stealyndeewin and Grey Bird, who each come off front-running sprint wins at Sunland. Ry Eikleberry has the mount on That’s Who, who will break from post 3 for owners Sam and Latane Stevens and trainer Joel Marr.

Tarahumar Flags and E Bar Way, who finished a respective second and third to That’s Who in the Hedeman Mile, both return for the Pepsi-Cola. Tarahumar Flags was second by three-quarters of a length, while it was another 11 lengths back in third to E Bar Way.
