Sunland Park: Lester’s Echo wires Mt. Cristo Rey

Lester’s Echo used his good speed to wire the field in the $85,000 Mt. Cristo Rey Handicap at Sunland Park on Saturday, winning by three-quarters of a length over Kiss My Hennessy. The 4 1/2-furlong race was restricted to 3-year-olds and up bred in New Mexico.

Lester’s Echo ($9.20) came into the Mt. Cristo Rey on top of his game, having won back-to-back allowances, including a 1,000-yard race that was open to Quarter Horses. He ran the opening quarter of Saturday’s race in 22.05 seconds, and went on to cover the distance on a fast track in 50.64 seconds. Isaias Cardenas was aboard for trainer Owen Bringhurst.
