Sunland Park handle rises


Sunland Park ended its 2005-06 meeting Sunday with a slight increase in average daily all-sources handle on the track's races. According to the track's figures, Sunland handled an average of $744,571 per day on its races for its 79-day meeting, a 1.5 percent increase over last year's average of $733,477 for an 87-day meeting.

There will be $1.3 million in retroactive purse distributions, bringing the meet total to over $22 million.

Ken Tohill won his third straight riding title, with 91 wins from 396 mounts, putting him well ahead of Alfredo Juarez Jr., who was second with 43 wins.

Henry Dominguez stopped Steve Asmussen from winning his third straight training title, posting 50 wins from 207 starters. This is Dominguez's first Sunland training title. Asmussen was a clear second with 38 wins from 159 starts. Kirk and Judy Robison were the leading Thoroughbred owners with 15 winners from 32 starts.
