Sunland Park: Back Seat Roll goes for her fifth in a row

Back Seat Roll will be seeking her fifth consecutive win Saturday when she leads a field of 11 in the $85,000 La Senora at Sunland Park. The six-furlong race is restricted to 3-year-old fillies bred in New Mexico.

Back Seat Roll has been on a tear since her third career start July 14, when she won her maiden in a trial for the Rio Grande Senorita Futurity at Ruidoso Downs. She came back and won the finale July 29, the $140,000 New Mexico Juvenile Fillies at Zia on Oct. 28, and the $85,000 Enchantress at Sunland in her most recent start Dec. 16.

“She knows where that wire is,” said Henry Dominguez, who trains Back Seat Roll for J. Kirk and Judy Robison.

Back Seat Roll will be turning back from a mile for the La Senora. She will break from post 3 under Enrique Gomez.

“I expect her to be laying about fourth or fifth, two or three lengths off the leader, where she can just stalk,” Dominguez said.

Dominguez added that in a large field, he feels it will be important for Back Seat Roll to get position to keep out of trouble. “She’s got tactical speed,” he said. “She’s got enough to be up close early.”

Others set to start include Desertsmagic, who was second to Back Seat Roll in the Enchantress; Way to Go Gerda, who played runner-up to Back Seat Roll in the New Mexico Cup Juvenile Fillies; and Chickee Chickee, winner of her last two starts, between Zia and Sunland.
