Sunland: Our Choice collects third straight win in Mt. Cristo Rey

Our Choice, ridden by Ry Eikleberry, takes the Mt. Cristo Rey Handicap for New Mexico-bred sprinters.

Our Choice won his third consecutive race of the Sunland Park meet on Saturday, when he rallied to take the $110,000 Mt. Cristo Rey Handicap by 2 3/4 lengths over Doms Flash. It was another half-length back in third to Lester’s Echo.

The Mt. Cristo, at 4 1/2 furlongs, was for 3-year-olds and up bred in New Mexico.

Our Choice ($4) came into the Mt. Cristo off wins in an optional $40,000 claiming race Jan. 17, and an optional claiming stakes Feb. 7. He raced in sixth early as Thenew Normal and Doms Flash dueled through an opening quarter in 21.43 seconds. Our Choice took the lead in the stretch and covered the distance on a fast track in 49.57.

Ry Eikleberry rode the winner for Stable H M A and trainer Justin Evans.

Our Choice, a 7-year-old son of Desert God, has now won 10 of 45 starts and $448,267. The Mt. Cristo was the third stakes win of his career. .
