Sunland: Hennesey Smash collects sixth straight win in Peppers Pride
Email
Hennesey Smash won her sixth consecutive race Saturday at Sunland Park, when she wired the field in the $85,000 Peppers Pride Handicap. She won by 1 1/4 lengths over even-money favorite Rose’s Desert, while it was another 1 ¼ lengths back in third to Playtricks.
Hennesey Smash ($8.20) was making her first start at two turns in the Peppers Pride, a one-mile race for fillies and mares bred in New Mexico. She set fractions of 24.03 seconds for the opening quarter, 47.94 for the half-mile, and 1:12.06 for six furlongs. Hennesey Smash proceeded to cover the distance on a track rated fast in 1:37.59.
Alfredo Juarez Jr. rode the winner for trainer Todd Fincher.
Hennesey Smash, who races for her breeder, Barbara Coleman, has now won 7 of 8 starts and $252,006. The Peppers Pride was the fourth stakes win of her career. Her streak began last August, in the $50,000 Chief Narbona at the Downs at Albuquerque.
Best Bets
FRIEND OF INDY has won three straight races, and won't have to run any faster than he did last time, in a $5,000 starter win at Evangeline, to beat this type. He'll have to avoid dueling with WELL'S GOLD. WELL'S GOLD will be flying early, and figures to hold on better on the drop from $17,500 N2X optional claiming to $10,000 optional claiming. Nevertheless, his tendency to tire late his races will probably make him vulnerable going a mile and 70 yards today. WAKKIANO made a mild late gain to finish third at this class level at Delta.
