Sunland: Glinda the Good gets year going in Island Fashion

Glinda the Good, who lined up against some top-class competition last year at 2, will launch her season Sunday in the $50,000 Island Fashion at Sunland Park in New Mexico. The one-mile race is for 3-year-old fillies, and it serves as a stepping-stone to the $200,000 Sunland Park Oaks on March 25.

Glinda the Good placed in two stakes last year, one against On Fire Baby, now a leading candidate for the Kentucky Oaks, and the other against Grace Hall, who went on to run second in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies. The Island Fashion will be Glinda the Good’s first start since Nov. 26, when she finished sixth in the Grade 2 Golden Rod at Churchill Downs. For her return, she has fired some strong works at Santa Anita.

Roman Chapa has the mount on Glinda the Good, who races for Stonestreet Stables and trainer Steve Asmussen. Glinda the Good was also bred by Stonestreet. She is a daughter of Hard Spun and out of the mare Magical Flash, who is a half-sister to the multiple Grade 1 winner Magical Maiden.

Others set to start in the Island Fashion include Take Me Away Today, who won the $50,000 El Paso Times Stakes at Sunland Park in her last start Jan. 22. She began her career at Golden Gate Fields, winning her maiden on the synthetic surface there last October.

Enrique Gomez has the mount for Tommy Town Thoroughbreds and trainer Henry Dominguez.
