Hurricane Lake has a good chance to win the first stakes race of his career Sunday when he takes on six others in the $50,000 Curribot at Sunland Park. The 1 1/16-mile race is for 3-year-olds and upward.
Others set to start include Ol Winedrinker Who, winner of the $150,000 Zia Derby in December, and Red Lead, a multiple stakes winner of nearly $700,000.
Hurricane Lake exits the $50,000 Winsham Lad at Sunland on Jan. 6, which Forest Mouse won in a track-record time. Hurricane Lake was third, beaten 3 3/4 lengths in the mile-and-70-yard race that went in 1:39. Forest Mouse and Tap the Gold, the runner-up in the Winsham Lad, did not return in the Curribot, which should bode well for Hurricane Lake.
Hurricane Lake also has several other factors in his favor. He could get a solid pace to run down, courtesy of Warren’s Knockout and Watch Me Go, both of whom are stretching out to two turns. Hurricane Lake also owns one of the field’s better last-race Beyer Speed Figures, an 83. He has been knocking on the door on a number of stakes in the region since being claimed for $40,000 out of a race at Betfair Hollywood Park last November.
Global Stage also exits the Winsham Lad and finished fourth, a neck behind Hurricane Lake. One start prior, Global Stage won the $55,000 Veteran over Forest Mouse. Ken Tohill will ride Global Stage.
Best Bets
AQUINNAH returns to a route and she couldn't have found a much better spot as a horse who wants to be involved early, as the expected pace scenario figures to favor those runners with a little early zip and she appears to be quickest of them all out of the gate; should control the tempo, and that should lead to her running to her best figures. CHARMINGMEGAN has tactical speed and likes to win, a combination that makes her easy to like; should get first run at the top pick.
