Sunland: Countess Curlin reaffirms affinity for mile races in Island Fashion
Email
Countess Curlin remained unbeaten at a mile Sunday at Sunland Park, when she rallied from between horses to win the $50,000 Island Fashion by four lengths. Countess Curlin is now 3 for 3 at the distance, with her other wins coming in races at Retama Park and Sam Houston.
The Island Fashion was for 3-year-old fillies and served as a prep for the $200,000 Sunland Park Oaks at 1 1/16 miles on March 24. Shesatopattraction finished second, while it was another three-quarters of a length back in third to Infinitely.
Countess Curlin ($4.20) settled in fifth on Sunday, as Shesatopattraction took the field through fractions of 24.25 seconds for the opening quarter, 49.53 for the half-mile, and 1:14.68 for six furlongs. Countess Curlin advanced on the final turn, came between horses, and then pulled clear under jockey Luis Contreras. She covered the distance on a fast track in 1:39.95.
Steve Asmussen trains Countess Curlin for her breeder, Stonestreet Stables. Countess Curlin has now won her last three starts and overall is 3 for 4. She picked up $30,000 for her first stakes win, to push her earnings to $58,889.
Countess Curlin is a daughter of Curlin, the two-time Horse of the Year owned by Stonestreet and trained by Asmussen.
Best Bets
BIG JOHN B takes a short drop off the claim and layoff, which could be viewed as a negative, but he has some decent works for this return and he has a decent-sized Beyer edge against this group; tactical speed should help him work out a favorable trip. SKIFFS BREWMEISTER merits respect off that last win and figure, his best yet; dangerous if he's able to take another step forward. BRODY BOY finished off the board in his turf debut but he earned a decent figure despite running 7th there, and he did endure a fairly tough trip; most recent workout at Parx indicates he retains his form.
