Sunland: Asmussen's pair upset

SUNLAND PARK, N.M. - Steve Asmussen's uncoupled entry of City Sleeper and Dazzling Rubies, bet down to 3-5 and 7-2 respectively, were upset by Inox ($26.80) in the $50,000-added Bold Ego Handicap at Sunland Park. Inox, a 6-year-old mare, outfinished Gimme a Clue by a neck to win the 5 1/2-furlong race in 1:03.63.

Asmussen, who has a string on the grounds here for the first time, won six stakes last season with ship-ins and finished sixth in the overall standings. With only 18 stalls for the current meet, Asmussen is dominating the standings with 19 wins from 66 starts, but strangely is now 0 for 6 in added-money events despite running numerous heavy favorites. On Saturday, City Sleeper finished third and Dazzling Rubies sixth.

Trained by Bart Hone, Inox came into the race after a 2 1/2-month layoff. Greg Green, who oversees Hone's horses at Sunland, explained that it wasn't a planned vacation. "She had an abscess in a foot, so we had to give her some time, then we couldn't get the right allowance race to go for her."

Inox won for the third time in five starts since coming to Hone and Green last summer from New York.
