Sunday Stakes roundup (6/3)

Woodbine: Only to You takes Nassau

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Only to You finished a nose back of Heliotrope in the 2000 Nassau Stakes, but the tables were turned in this year's running of the Grade 3 event at Woodbine, when Only to You gunned down Heliotrope in deep stretch to record her first stakes win.

Favored Heliotrope set slow fractions over the soft going in the 1 1/16-mile turf stakes for fillies and mares. Only to You raced four lengths off the lead on the backstretch, and began to mount a five-wide rally at the top of the stretch.

Under Todd Kabel, Only to You gradually wore down Heliotrope in the final furlong, and prevailed by a half-length in a time of 1:47.31. Bristol Pistol closed to finish another 1 1/2 lengths back in third in the seven-horse field. Great Fever was scratched.

Only to You ($9.50) banked $117,705 of the $196,175 purse for Sam-Son Farm and trainer Mark Frostad.

France: Anabaa Blue the Derby champ

Anabaa Blue fought off the challenges of Chichicastenango and Grandera to win the 1 1/2-mile, $903,000 Prix du Jockey-Club (French Derby) at Chantilly.

Victory provided his trainer Carlos Lerner and jockey Christophe Soumillon with the biggest wins of their careers and propelled him to the top of the 3-year-old ranks in France.

But he was perhaps a bit lucky to win, as third-place Grandera was checked at the quarter pole and again at the three-sixteenths pole before finding room on the rail for a late run.

Anabaa Blue led for three furlongs, then tracked the 3-2 favorite Maille Pistol until reclaiming the lead at the three-sixteenths pole. Maille Pistol faded to finish eighth, beaten by just four lengths. Anabaa Blue finished 2:27.90 on good ground at 8-1.

In the Group 1 Prix Jean Prat for 3-year-olds, the John Dunlop-trained Olden Times pulled out all the stops under Pat Eddery to defeat King of Tara by a head at 4-1 with Denon just a short head further back in third. The time for the 1 1/8 miles was 1:48.10.

Japan: Fairy King Prawn beaten

At Tokyo, Fairy King Prawn failed in his attempt for a repeat win in the $1,554,000 Grade 1 Yasuda Kinen. The Hong Kong-based 6-year-old finished eighth behind the victorious Black Hawk, who covered the mile on firm turf in 1:33.00 while overcoming a seemingly impossible number 17 post.

Bay Meadows: Brite Girl pays off

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Brite Girl, a recent $40,000 claim by trainer Brian Koriner, posted a convincing length victory in the $56,075 Sunnyvale Handicap for fillies and mares at Bay Meadows.

Phaenna, the 4-5 favorite, set the pace in the six-furlong Sunnyvale, but was under constant pressure from 16-1 Selector. Brite Girl, ridden by Jason Lumpkins, moved up to challenge on the final turn and took the lead near the quarter pole. Selector responded and went with her, finishing second by four lengths, as Phaenna stopped badly and finished fourth. Aloha Mangos was up to finish third by a half-length.

Brite Girl ($7.60) ran the distance in 1:09.63 and earned $27,950 in her 17th career victory.
