Sunday stakes roundup

* Hoovergetthekeys ($45) made a strong closing move and held off faster-finishing Takin it Deep by a nose to win the $50,110 Alamedan Handicap at the Alameda County Fair in Pleasanton, Calif. Hoovergetthekeys, who won the Golden Gate Derby and El Camino Real Derby in 2001, had been winless since an $80,000 optional claimer on the turf last Sept. 10 at Bay Meadows.

* Joanies Bella ($3.60) took the lead at the start and held on by a neck to win the $50,000 Cincinnatian Stakes at River Downs in her turf debut. Come Hither rallied along the inside to finish second, four lengths clear of Wars Done, who tired after pressuring the winner early. Final time for 1 1/16 miles on turf was 1:44.20.

* Highhopesemilyluck ($15.60) continued her rapid rise to stardom Sunday afternoon, winning the $42,800 Fantasia Stakes at Louisiana Downs by a length over Taylor's Queen. The winner has now reeled off four straight victories, her last two in stakes company.

* Classic Nix ($46.80) beat stablemate Pickin the Paceby a length to capture the $36,875 Princess Elaine Stakes at Canterbury Park. Aachu was third

* High Dice churned out a gutsy three-quarter-length win over Tate's Way in the Who Doctor Who at the Lincoln State Fair. Winning the $22,500 Who Doctor Who for the third consecutive year, High Dice ($4.40) was ridden by Dan Beck, whose victory celebration was to be short-lived. In the next race, his mount, Warrior Strode, broke down into the first turn and threw the rider heavily to the ground. Beck broke his collarbone in three places and will likely miss the rest of this year.

* Andreas Schutz took a page from Aidan O'Brien's book at Hamburg on Sunday as he saddled the first three home in the Group 1 Deutsches (German) Derby with Next Desert, Salve Regina, and Tomori. Next Desert reveled in the heavy going, stopping the clock in 2:39.23 as the 5-2 choice.
