Sunday stakes recaps (6/18/06)


* R. Associate pulled off a 28-1 upset in the one-mile, $75,000 Emerald Budweiser Handicap, coming from well off the pace under Ben Russell to beat Norm's Nephew by a length in 1:34.20. Heavily favored Flamethrowintexan held third.

* Joey P. took the lead under Joe Bravo and was never headed, sprinting to a 2 1/4-length victory in the $60,000 Longfellow Stakes. Joey P. ran the 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:03.20 and paid $4.80. Slam Bammy was second and Kazoo, the favorite, four lengths farther back in third.

Later, Quiet Desperation sprang a small upset in the $60,000 Bernie Dowd Handicap, beating 10-1 My Husband by 1 1/4 lengths. It was another 15 1/2 lengths back to the odds-on favorite Upturn, under Bravo, in third. Quiet Desperation ran the mile and 70 yards in 1:41.80, paid $15.60, and topped a $168.20 exacta.

* Trainer Mike Stidham, who won Saturday's HBPA Mile with Galactic Cat, capped a big weekend at Canterbury Park, leading over Charley Tango to defeat six rivals in the $50,000 Come Summer.

* Johnie Bye Night, the 4-5 favorite, won the Wadsworth Memorial Handicap at Finger Lakes by 6 1/4 lengths in stakes-record time of 1:49.47 for the 1 1/8 miles. Plans are for Johnie Bye Night to run next at Saratoga.

Donkey Engine ($8.60) won the $50,000 Ontario County by three-quarters of a length over favored Strummer. Donkey Engine was ridden by Paul Nicol Jr., whose victory left him six shy of a 3,000 career wins.
