Sunday stakes recaps (6/15/03)


Other Sunday stakes:

* Handyman Bill ($20.80) avenged a loss as the odds-on favorite in an allowance race with a strong effort to win the $65,800 Foster City Handicap on closing day at Bay Meadows. He held off a late challenge by Ninebanks to win the 1 1/16-mile turf race by three-quarters of a length.

* Sky Soldier, placed in perfect stalking position by Mark Salvaggio, beat Deadline by a length in the $50,000 Restoration Stakes at Monmouth Park. A meet-high Father's Day crowd of 22,368 watched Sky Soldier run the mile in 1:38.45 over the wet-fast track.

* Covering Ground waited patiently before splitting rivals in midstretch to win the $50,000 John D. Marsh Stakes at Colonial Downs by 2 1/2 lengths. Trained by Frank Brothers, he paid $13.20 and was timed in 1:49.79 for the 1 1/16 miles over good turf.
