Sun Boat euthanized at age 5

EmailSun Boat, the winner of the Grade 2 San Diego Handicap at Del Mar on July 21, was euthanized on Tuesday because of complications from laminitis, according to one of his owners, Bob Feld.

Sun Boat was at a lay-up facility in Southern California when the injury was diagnosed, Feld said. The 5-year-old gelding had not started since finishing last of 12 in the $1 million Pacific Classic at Del Mar on Aug. 19.

"It came up pretty quickly," Feld said of the gelding's illness. "It was very unfortunate."

At the time of his death from the hoof disease, Sun Boat was campaigned by Feld's Bongo Racing Stable, Bob Tjosvold, and Don Capen and was trained by Mike Mitchell. They claimed Sun Boat for $50,000 at Santa Anita in April. He was gelded shortly thereafter. In four subsequent starts, Sun Boat earned $271,600 for the group. Lifetime, he won 4 of 13 starts and $334,345.
