Sulamani drops into Group 2

Email

Sulamani drops into a Group 2 race for the first time in nine starts and 22 months at Newmarket on Wednesday when he meets seven rivals in the 1 1/2-mile Princess of Wales's Stakes.

Winless in two tries since completing a U.S. double in the Arlington Million and Turf Classic last year, Sulamani is coming off a fourth-place finish behind Rakti in the 1 1/4-mile Prince of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot on June 16. Godolphin is still considering Sulamani, a four-time Group 1 or Grade 1 winner, for the July 24 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes, in which he was runner-up last year, but he must acquit himself first against two whose fortunes of late have been on the upswing.

High Accolade was hardly disgraced when he finished second, six lengths behind Sulamani's stablemate Doyen, in the King Edward VII Stakes, while the Aidan O'Brien-trained The Great Gatsby is expected to improve off his first start in a year, when he was third in the Gran Premio di Milano. Magistretti could also enter the picture following a troubled sixth in Warssan's Coronation Cup.
