Sugar Bay continues her comeback

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Multiple stakes winners Sugar Bay and Double Malt are among a quality field of fillies and mares in Friday's eighth race at Woodbine, a classified allowance with an $80,000 claiming option. The race is scheduled for a mile on the grass.

Sugar Bay was a Sovereign Award finalist for champion 3-year-old fillies in 2008, when she won 6 of 9 starts and $561,660. She rode the wave of a five-race winning streak in the second half of the 2008 meet, which included stakes scores in the Duchess and La Lorgnette on Polytrack and the Ontario Colleen and Carotene on turf.

Sugar Bay was sidelined for all of 2009 and was fourth in the allowance prep for the Nassau Stakes when she returned from a 19-month layoff May 16. Thirteen days later, she finished second to a sharp Tasty Temptation in the allowance prep for the Hill 'n' Dale Stakes.

Chantal Sutherland will ride Sugar Bay for trainer Mac Benson. Sugar Bay breezed five-eighths in a bullet 1:00.40 on the Polytrack last Sunday.

Double Malt is starting for the first time since her fourth-place finish Oct. 7 in the Classy 'N Smart Stakes. She tore a swath through the Ontario-sired 3-year-old filly ranks last year, when she captured the Passing Mood, Eternal Search, and La Prevoyante Stakes.

Double Malt will compete with an $80,000 claiming tag and be ridden by Eurico Da Silva.

Missit exits a runner-up placing in the Nassau prep behind Simply Splendid, who subsequently won the Grade 2 Nassau. The highlight of Missit's career was her nose victory in the Grade 2 Providencia Stakes in 2008 at Santa Anita.

Sheraton Park figures to lead the way in her second start off the bench. She earned her only black type when third behind eventual champion older turf female Points of Grace Oct. 31 in the one-mile River Memories Stakes.

Magic Broomstick took both of her optional claiming starts in May, including one on the grass.

Trainer Josie Carroll entered Magicalcarpetride and Avie's Tale, who will run as separate betting interests.

Magicalcarpetride is making her Woodbine debut following a fourth-place finish in an optional claimer on the dirt at Philadelphia Park. She lost by 12 1/2 lengths in her lone turf attempt at Gulfstream.

Avie's Tale ran fifth in her next-to-last start in the River Memories and has been idle since going unplaced in a Jan. 28 optional claimer at Gulfstream.
