Suffolk: Face-off in Last Dance

The winners of the last two Massachusetts-bred stakes will clash in Satuirday's $50,000 Last Dance Stakes at Suffolk Downs.

For Petesamassbred, the winner of the Rise Jim Stakes June 28, the test this time will be the two-turn distance of a mile and 70 yards after sprinting to victory in his last start.

For Flirt for Fame, the winner of the Isadorable Stakes July 5, the challenge will be facing males.

Each has overcome their challenge before.

Petesamassbred is having a career year at the age of 7. He has won 4 of his last 6 starts and has been in the money in 7 of his 10 races this year. He has been steadily progressing toward a win in Saturday's race, having finished third in the 2006 Last Dance and second last year. Six of his eight wins have come around two turns.

Flirt for Fame and her connections, trainer Mike Gorham and owner John D. Murphy, have done a great job racking up cash this year while ducking the champion Massachusetts-bred mare Ask Queenie. She scratched out of the Rise Jim and avoided the Petesamassbred/Ask Queenie 1-2 finish, and has scored two wins this season in three starts.

Ask Queenie is skipping the Last Dance.

Flirt for Fame has beaten males twice, in the African Prince Stakes and John Kirby Stakes both in 2006.

Last year's Last Dance winner, Gorgeous Silk, is back looking for his first victory this year after three tries, including a fifth-place finish in the Rise Jim.
