Suffolk: Ask Queenie big favorite

Reigning New England horse of the year Ask Queenie goes for her third straight stakes win in the $40,000 Sunset Gun against fellow Massachusetts-bred fillies and mares.

Suffolk Downs racing secretary Jim Pambianchi was challenged to come up with a full field without weighting one of the most dominant runners to race in New England in several years out of the race. His solution: Weight allowances that will give the five 3-year-olds in the field a 13-pound break from Ask Queenie. The two older mares get eight-pound weight breaks.

No amount of weight would seem to be enough to stop Ask Queenie. Facing males in the Thomas Moran Stakes last time out, Ask Queenie fell behind Petesamassbred by more than a length in the stretch and still found a way to win by a head. The Moran score pushed her record on the Suffolk turf course to 4 for 5, and there aren't any males to press her when she runs Monday under jockey Dyn Panell.

Flirt for Fame, who is the only other stakes winner this year at Suffolk, tries to regroup after finishing eighth in the Moran, which was her first grass attempt. Flirt for Fame got a five-pound break and beat Ask Queenie in the First Episode Stakes. She will be among the 3-year-old fillies getting 13 pounds this time.

Caller Sara Kate has won two open races since losing to Ask Queenie on June 3 and to Flirt for Fame on

June 17, earning Beyer Speed Figures of 70 and 82 for the wins.

Southoftheborder and Deerwood Lass are the only runners in the field other than Ask Queenie who have won on the turf. Southoftheborder scored her third turf victory in an allowance race Aug. 14. Deerwood Lass, a 10-year-old mare, is 2 for 19 on the Suffolk course.
