Street Sense made 5-1 favorite

Email

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - With seven new horses displacing others from Pool 2, the third and final pool of the 2007 Kentucky Derby Future Wager opens Thursday, but many fans will likely wait for the results of two key Derby preps, the Blue Grass Stakes and Arkansas Derby, before placing their bets.

Street Sense, who is listed as the 5-1 morning-line favorite by Churchill Downs linemaker Mike Battaglia among the 23 separately listed wagering interests in Pool 3, will have his final prep Saturday in the Blue Grass at Keeneland. Odds on the parimutuel futures pool are not final until 6 p.m. Eastern on Sunday, the last of four days in the wagering period.

Great Hunter, listed at 10-1 on the Pool 3 morning line, also will have his final Derby prep in the Blue Grass, as will Zanjero (30-1), Dominican (50-1), and Teuflesberg (50-1). Meanwhile, Curlin, the favorite for Saturday's Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park, is listed at 12-1 in Pool 3.

Seven 3-year-olds are new names for Pool 3: Belgravia, Chelokee, Cowtown Cat, Deadly Dealer, Dominican, Reporting for Duty, and Tiago. They replace horses whose Derby stock has fallen since they were separately listed interests in Pool 2: Adore the Gold, Cobalt Blue, Flying First Class, Imawildand-crazyguy, King of the Roxy, Ravel, and Summer Doldrums.

After Street Sense, favorites on the Churchill morning line for Pool 3 are Nobiz Like Shobiz (6-1), Circular Quay (8-1), and Scat Daddy (8-1). None will race again until the May 5 Derby.

In the Oaks futures, Rags to Riches is listed as a strong 2-1 favorite among the 23 fillies separately listed for the May 4 race. She is followed by Octave (10-1), Cotton Blossom (12-1), and High Heels (12-1).

There are nine new names for Oaks Pool 3: Dawn After Dawn, Her Majesty, Moonee Ponds, Panty Raid, Sealy Hill, Silverinyourpocket, Silver Knockers, Swift Temper, and Time's Mistress. They replace the following from Pool 2: Appealing Zophie, Christmas Kid, Devil House, Dreaming of Anna, Five Star Daydream, Folk, Get Ready Bertie, Runway Rosie, and Total.

The mutuel field, the 24th or "all others" wagering interest, invariably draws heavy action during the first two pools of both the Derby and Oaks futures, but usually not in Pool 3. The field is listed at 20-1 for both races in Pool 3.

Pool 1 for both the Derby and Oaks futures was held Feb. 8-11, and Pool 2 was held March 8-11. Churchill first offered parimutuel Derby futures in 1999. The $2-minimum, win-only wager is available at tracks and wagering outlets in 41 states and in some Canadian jurisdictions.

Aggregate handle on Pools 1 and 2 for the Derby futures this year is $900,301.
