Street Sense finally ready to run

Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner and Eclipse Award champion Street Sense will finally make his 3-year-old debut on Saturday at Tampa Bay Downs in the $300,000 Tampa Bay Derby. The Grade 3 event is one of four stakes on a card that also includes the $200,000 Florida Oaks and the Grade 3 Hillsborough Stakes on turf.

Street Sense will take on the Todd Pletcher-trained Any Given Saturday as well as the Nick Zito-trained pair of Optimistic Steve and Most Distinguished, Delightful Kiss, and Sam Davis runner-up All I Can Get. Green Vegas remains a possibility, according to his trainer, Luis Olivares.

Street Sense, trained by Carl Nafzger, has been working well at the Palm Meadows training center, where he breezed a half-mile in 51 seconds on Wednesday.

Any Given Saturday won the Sam F. Davis on Feb. 17 at Tampa, which like the Tampa Derby was at 1 1/16 miles. The victory was the third in four starts for Any Given Saturday, who is owned by WinStar Farm. Pletcher and WinStar sent out Bluegrass Cat to win the 2006 Sam F. Davis, and Bluegrass Cat was upset by Deputy Glitters in the Tampa Derby.

Delightful Kiss, an entry-level allowance winner at Gulfstream Park going a mile on Feb. 11, worked a half-mile in 49 seconds at Calder on Wednesday.

Olivares said that Green Vegas, runner-up to Buffalo Man in the OBS Championship at Ocala on Feb. 12, missed a couple of days of training recently, and as a result he may skip the Tampa Derby.

"I'll probably enter, look over the field, and then make a decision," Olivares said. "If we pass here we'll go to the Aventura at Gulfstream later this month."

A field of six or seven is shaping up for the 1 1/16-mile Oaks. Autobahn Girl, trained by Zito, is the likely favorite. She overcame an eventful trip to capture the Suncoast Stakes four weeks ago and like Any Given Saturday figures to benefit from a race over the track.

Pletcher counters with Cotton Blossom, who makes her first start since finishing third in the BC Juvenile Fillies.
