SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Don’t categorize the turf star Deterministic, who won his fifth consecutive graded stakes in Saturday’s Grade 1 Manhattan Stakes at 1 3/16 miles. In the last two years, Deterministic has won five stakes at 1 1/8 miles, but also stakes at a mile and at Saturday’s distance, the longest victory of his 15-race career. The wins at a variety of distances has led trainer Miguel Clement to plan a start for Deterministic in the Grade 1 Fourstardave Stakes at a mile on turf on Aug. 8. “The Fourstardave would be very logical,” Clement said. “It’s an obvious goal. “Wherever you point him, he’ll perform. It’s a question of picking the right spots.” The Manhattan was more than the correct race for Deterministic, who stalked the pace before winning by a half-length as the 9-2 third choice in a field of nine. He zipped through the $1 million race in 1:50.50, well below Say the Word’s mark of 1:51.40 set in 2020. Deterministic won the $750,000 Fourstardave Stakes last year in what turned out to be his final start of the year. He resumed racing on May 2 with a victory by three-quarters of a length in the Grade 3 Fort Marcy Stakes at 1 1/8 miles at Aqueduct. The result of the Fourstardave could influence how Clement manages Deterministic’s campaign in late summer and through the fall. The winner of the race receives a fees-paid berth to the Breeders’ Cup Mile at Keeneland on Oct. 31. While a one-mile race is likely to be the immediate focus, Clement said on Sunday that the outcome of the Manhattan Stakes could lead to appearances in longer races for Deterministic. “He’s top class. I don’t think he has any distance limitations,” Clement said. “He’s clearly got the speed to win at a mile as we saw last year. “He handled a mile and three-sixteenths with no difficulty whatsoever, so I’m sure he’ll stretch even farther.” Deterministic has nine wins, including seven in stakes. He has earned $2,634,765 for the partnership of St. Elias Stable, Steven Duncker, Ken Langone and Vicarage Stable. Clement had two graded stakes wins during the five-day Belmont at Saratoga race week that ended on Sunday, including Thursday’s Grade 2 Belmont Gold Cup at two miles with the 7-year-old Tawny Port.  The victories came days after his 35th birthday on June 2. Bottas, winner of the Grade 2 Pilgrim Stakes at Aqueduct last October, finished a solid third in the Grade 3 Pennine Ridge Stakes for 3-year-olds on turf on Thursday in his first start since a ninth-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf at Del Mar last October. Tawny Port, who has won 6 of 32 starts, ended a 17-race losing streak since the John’s Call Stakes at Saratoga in August 2023 in the $250,000 Belmont Gold Cup, closing from sixth of eight to prevail by 2 1/2 lengths. The victory gave Tawny Port a clear goal – the Grade 1 Christophe Clement Stakes at 1 1/2 miles on turf at Saratoga on Aug. 15. The race is named in honor of Miguel’s late father, a highly decorated trainer who died in May 2025. Miguel Clement took command of the stable after his father’s death. “If I could swap any race this year, I’d like to win the Christophe Clement,” he said. Late last summer, Tawny Port finished second on consecutive weekends at Kentucky Downs, the $1 million Bowling Green Gold Cup at 2 1/16 miles, and the Grade 2, $2 million Kentucky Turf Cup at 1 1/2 miles. This year, a start in both races will be nearly impossible. The races are on Sept. 3 and 5, a change from the track’s 2025 calendar. “That’s a Debbie Downer to my day,” Clement said on Sunday morning when notified of the changed calendar. With the win in the Belmont Gold Cup, Tawny Port received a fees-paid berth to the Group 1 Melbourne Cup at two miles at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne, Australia, on Nov. 3, a $7.04 million race Clement said will be considered. At the same time, the winner of the $750,000 Christophe Clement Stakes receives a fees-paid berth to the BC Turf at 1 1/2 miles at Keeneland on Oct. 31. Tawny Port was ninth of 14 in the BC Turf at Del Mar last November. The stable has another accomplished turf marathon specialist in reserve in Far Bridge, a three-time Grade 1 winner who won the Grade 3 Pan American Stakes at Gulfstream Park on March 28 in his last start. “He came out of the race at Gulfstream with an issue with his leg,” Clement said. “He won the Pan American very impressively. The next morning, I knew we were in trouble.” A winner of 10 of 21 starts for LSU Stables, the 6-year-old Far Bridge could return to racing this fall. “He’ll be back in training in a month or two,” Clement said. “I gave him time.” :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
