Strawberry Kid tops Stevens Handicap

COLUMBUS, Neb. - Strawberry Kid, a winner of four races in his first five starts this year, heads a field of five in the $15,000-added Stevens Handicap at 6 1/2 furlongs, the closing day feature at Columbus.

After such a strong beginning to his career, Strawberry Kid has continued on well but has suffered defeats in the St. Paul Stakes at Canterbury Park, the State Fair Derby at Lincoln, and the Nebraska Breeders' Sophomore Stakes here in his last three starts while never finishing worse than third. Trained by Terrell Hemmer, he has compiled a 4-2-2 record from eight starts. He should benefit from the turn back in distance for this race and will be reunited with Perry Compton, who will be in from Iowa to ride. Strawberry Kid will be the starting highweight at 122 pounds.

What About David is a front-running sort who could prove tough to run down. Alex Granda rides at 118 pounds as What About David makes his stakes debut. He is trained by Jim Compton.
