Storm Flag Flying 7-5 in futures

Email

Bettors hammered Storm Flag Flying in the Breeders' Cup last weekend, sending the runaway Matron Stakes winner off at 7-5.

Storm Flag Flying, who won the Matron by 12 3/4 lengths, was as low as 1-9 on Friday after only several hours of betting. She drifted until the closing bell at 7 p.m. Eastern on Sunday as bettors searched for value on other horses. Santa Catarina, second in the Del Mar Debutante in her most recent start, ended up the second choice at 5-1. No other individual horse was lower than 15-1.

Future betting was also offered on the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, and in that pool, Vindication, winner of the Kentucky Cup Juvenile, settled at 7-2 to end as the favorite. Sky Mesa, winner of the Hopeful Stakes, was the second choice at 9-2, and Whywhywhy, the winner of the Futurity Stakes at Belmont, was third choice at 7-1.

The Juvenile and Juvenile Fillies were the final installments of the Breeders' Cup future wagers this year. The other six races on the Breeders' Cup card had been offered over three other weekends.

Including the Juvenile and Juvenile Fillies, total betting on all four weekends was $541,451, a number in line with expectations, Breeders' Cup officials said. The future bets were offered for the first time this year.

Total betting for the two juvenile races was $107,125. Handle on the Juvenile slightly outpaced betting on the Juvenile Fillies, at $55,104 and $52,021, respectively.

"I thought that was a pretty strong number," said Ken Kirchner, the vice president of product development for Breeders' Cup.

Betting on Awesome Humor, the third choice on the morning line in the Juvenile Fillies, was suspended Saturday at mid-day after the filly's trainer, Elliott Walden, notified racing officials that she was being taken out of training for the year because of an ankle chip in her right front leg.

"Elliott did a heads-up job in notifying us of a potential problem," Kirchner said. "I'm extremely grateful, and that's a credit to Elliott."

Bets on Awesome Humor made before her withdrawal will not be refunded. Future bet rules prohibit refunds and cancellations at any time.
