Storm causes numerous cancellations


Due to a strong winter storm that delivered mixed precipitation to the Midwest and East Coast, a number of tracks canceled live cards and/or simulcast operations on Wednesday.

* Aqueduct canceled its nine-race card due to a mixture of snow, ice, and rain in the New York area. It was the second cancellation of the winter meet. Aqueduct was to remain open for simulcasting with no charge for admission and parking. Live racing is scheduled to resume Thursday at 12:30 p.m.

* Because of a wintry mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain that hit the Baltimore-Washington region, Maryland Jockey Club officials canceled live racing at Laurel Park for Wednesday. There will be simulcasting at Laurel and its sister track, Pimlico Race Course.

* Turfway Park in Florence, Ky., has canceled both its live racing and simulcasting for Wednesday. Live racing is expected to resume Thursday, with first post at 1:10 p.m. Eastern.

* Churchill Downs' Trackside Louisville will be closed for simulcasting Wednesday due to the winter storm.

* Because of snow and ice in the Cincinnati area overnight, River Downs will not open its race book for simulcasting on Wednesday. Officials expect to open as usual by Thursday at 11:30 a.m.

* Beulah Park has canceled live racing for Wednesday. The Columbus, Ohio, track is expected to resume racing on Friday.

* A snow and ice storm that hit central Pennsylvania caused Penn National to cancel its Wednesday night live racing program. Racing is expected to resume Thursday night.

* Charles Town Races and Slots in Charles Town, W.Va., also canceled its Wednesday night card.
