Stewards declare horse non-starter

For the second day in a row, the stewards at Aqueduct on Sunday declared a horse a non-starter because of an unfair start.

In the sixth race, Fly With Karakorum, 6-1, was ruled a non-starter when she broke far behind the field while being handled by an assistant starter when the gates opened. All win, place, show, daily double, exacta, and trifecta wagers involving her were refunded, a total of $241,162.

Holders of pick three tickets with Fly With Karakorum were eligible for a consolation payoff. Pick four and pick six bettors were not as lucky. Their Fly With Karakorum tickets transferred to Hummel, the post-time favorite, who finished second.

A similar situation occurred Saturday when Evening Edition, the even-money choice in the fifth race, threw her head as the gates opened and came out far behind the field. She finished next to last, but stewards ruled she was in the hands of an assistant starter at the start. Wagers on Evening Edition were handled in the same manner as those on Fly With Karakorum, and resulted in refunds of $567,169.
