Stephanie Beattie wins Penn training title

Stephanie Beattie's horses won two of the final three races on Tuesday night's card to clinch the 2008 training title at Penn National Race Course.

Beattie came into the final program of the calendar year leading defending champion Murray Rojas by just two wins, and entered runners in three races. Rojas, who last season became the first female in the track's 36-year history to win a training title, ran eight horses on the final night of the meet, but managed no better than a pair of seconds.

Beattie won back-to-back races with Wonderful Gal ($5.20) and Devil's Pal ($12) to wind up with 96 winners, four more than Rojas.

Sam Webb finished a distant third in the standings with 48 winners.

William Otero, runner-up to Thomas Clifton a year ago, finished as Penn National's leading jockey with 126 winners. David Cora was second with 107 and Katie Lee, with 92 winners, finished third for the second straight season.
