Stealth Cat targets repeat at Sunland

Email

Stealth Cat and Prairie Charm have won a combined 10 of 18 starts at Sunland Park but have rarely raced against each other at the New Mexico track. On Saturday, the two meet in the $50,000 El Dario. The 6 1/2-furlong race for fillies and mares drew a field of 11.

Stealth Cat brings a 6-for-11 record at Sunland into the El Dario, a race she won last year when it was called the Santa Teresa. She comes into this year's version on top of her game, having captured the $50,000 Bold Ego Handicap at 5 1/2 furlongs at Sunland in her last start Dec. 27. She closed from eight lengths back for the win, and the Beyer Speed Figure of 78 that she earned is one of the best last-race numbers in the El Dario.

Stealth Cat, who stalked the pace in the Santa Teresa, will break from post 4. Luis Contreras has the mount for J. Kirk Robison and trainer Steve Asmussen.

Prairie Charm is 4 for 7 at Sunland and is riding a two-race win streak into the El Dario. Back in November, she was up for a nose win in the $60,000 Zia Park Distaff at six furlongs, for a career-best Beyer of 90. One start later, Prairie Charm wired the field in a one-mile allowance at Sunland, on Dec. 27. She drew post 2 for Saturday, and trainer Gary Cross has given the mount to Ken Tohill. Prairie Charm races for Richard Lueck.
