Statebreds take shot at 5 stakes

PORTLAND, Ore. - Five stakes worth a total of $80,000 highlight Saturday's 13th Oregon Championship Day program at Portland Meadows.

All nine races on the card are restricted to Oregon-breds, and a total of 72 horses have been entered.

The $40,000 Os West Oregon Futurity for 3-year-olds at a mile goes as the featured eighth race. Tom Two figures as a strong favorite over nine challengers after winning the Bill Wineberg and the Columbia River in his last two starts.

Also dangerous in the Futurity is Cascadians Cuttie, the runner-up to Tom Two in the Wineberg and Columbia River. Cascadians Cuttie is one of six runners in the Futurity lineup from the barn of trainer Ben Root.

The stakes action gets under way with the $10,000 Oregon Sprint Championship, which goes as the third race. My Friend Dave, last season's horse of the meeting, figures to be a heavy choice in the six-furlong race.

The fourth race is the $10,000 Jane Driggers Debutante for 2-year-old fillies at six furlongs. Eight fillies are entered, but there will be only five betting interests as the field includes three stable entries.

The $10,000 Oregon Hers for 3-year-old fillies at a mile goes as race 6. Wice O Kat, last year's Oregon Futurity winner, takes on six rivals.

Race 7 is the $10,000 Oregon His for 3-year-olds at a mile, and A Colt Named Sue figures to vie for favoritism with Raggidy Rowe, who returns to Portland Meadows after a successful campaign in Canada.
