Starship Angel targets Rare Treat

Starship Angel, who overcame a terrible start to win a second-level allowance race in her last start, is being pointed to Saturday's $65,000 Rare Treat Stakes for fillies and mares at 1 1/8 miles.

Starship Angel leapt at the start and found herself 11 lengths off the early pace, but came with a late run to win the allowance race by one length. In her prior start, at the Meadowlands, Starship Angel won a first-level allowance race by 9 1/2 lenghts in pace-pressing fashion.

Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin said Starship Angel has been schooling at the gate every day.

"She can be a little bit of a madam in there," McLaughlin said. "She's doing well, we're schooling her every day. We'll probably enter and hope that she's learned her lessons well."

McLaughlin said Starship Angel has been schooling wearing a blanket over her hind end, to make her feel more comfortable in the gate.

"She's been much better," McLaughlin said.

Others pointing to the Rare Treat include Life at Ten, Pumpkin Shell, and Yet Again. Possible starters include Love's Blush and Nasreen.

* Jockey Jackie Davis, who escaped injury when her mount, Suddenly I See, suffered a fatal injury during the running of Monday's second race, loses her apprentice status following Wednesday's card. Jose Henriquez will remain her agent. Henriquez has given up booking mounts for Maylan Studart.

* Jockey Ramon Dominguez appeared to escape injury when his mount, Thousand Excuses, fell down turning for home of Monday's ninth race. Dominguez got up right away. Thousand Excuses was euthanized on track.
