Starry Pie scores upset in Dixie Miss

Jockey Luis Quinonez completed a sweep of the two weekend stakes at Louisiana Downs when Starry Pie rallied through the stretch for a two-length win over My Silver Charm in Saturday's $50,000 Dixie Miss Stakes. It was another head back in third to favorite Elliecat.

Quinonez also won the Elge Raspberry here Friday with Tortuga Flats.

Starry Pie ($14.80) let the pace go early, as Blushing Sugarplum, Ruby's Grand Slam, and Shimmering Sunset raced through an opening quarter in 21.84 seconds. Starry Pie moved up approaching the turn, continued to gain on the leaders along the rail, then angled out in the stretch to run down My Silver Charm. Elliecat closed fast for third.

Starry Pie covered the six furlongs for 3-year-old fillies in 1:10.11. Steve Wren trains Starry Pie, while trainer Cole Norman sent out both My Silver Charm and Elliecat.

"Cole Norman always sends out good horses," said C.R. Trout, who owns Starry Pie. "Today, we happened to have the best horse."

Trout said Starry Pie could move into graded stakes company for her next start. She has now won 4 of 6 starts and $88,800. Starry Pie is a daughter of Pioneering.
