Star Vega ($5.00) wins the $150,000 Providenica Stakes by a neck on Sunday at Santa Anita.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Star Vega and jockey Mike Smith gave trainer Jim Cassidy a sweep of Santa Anita's weekend turf stakes for 3-year-olds, winning the $150,000 on Sunday by a neck over Makeup Artist. Pacesetter Shapes And Shadows finished one and a half lengths back in third in the mile and an eighth turf race for fillies. No Kings was fourth; 3-2 favorite Major Idea raced wide and flattened out to fifth. Katdogawan was last in the field of six.

The 1:47.89 victory by Star Vega followed Saturday's win in the La Puente Stakes win by Cassidy-trained Steelaninch. Like her stablemate, Star Vega was making her second U.S. start after a second-place finish in her U.S. debut. Star Vega returned $5 as the second wagering choice. It was her third win from six starts, and her first win for owners Jim Ford, Deron Pearson and John Cuchna.
