Stampede Park stakes total $800K

The stakes schedule for Stampede Park will remain unchanged this year, with 14 stakes offering total purses of $800,000 at the Calgary, Alberta, oval.

The $125,000 Alberta Derby, a 1o1/16-mile stakes for 3-year-olds, remains the richest race of the meeting and will be run on June 14.

The Penny Ridge, a 1 1/16-mile handicap for 3-year-old fillies, will be the closing-day feature on June 15.

The other 12 stakes at the 50-day meeting that begins March 21 are handicaps carrying $50,000 purses.

Four of those races - the President's, Mount Royal, Duchess of York, and Herald Gold Plate - offer bonus money for Alberta-breds who finish in the top three.

Stampede Park opened for training on Jan. 14. On Wednesday, the racing office reported that 760 of the 1,120 available stalls were occupied.
