Stakes winners targeting DeBartolo

A host of turf stakes winners from around the Midwest are under consideration for the $125,000 DeBartolo Memorial Breeders' Cup at Remington Park on Monday, including defending champ Major Rhythm. A 1 1/8-mile race, the DeBartolo is the richest turf race of the meet, and it will be supported by two other stakes, the $40,000 Ricks Memorial for fillies and mares on turf and the $40,000 Clever Trevor Juvenile.

There is a special first post of 2:30 p.m. Central on Monday.

Other horses nominated to the DeBartolo include B.A. Way, a half-brother to Breeders' Cup Turf winner Better Talk Now and the winner of the $200,000 Caesar Rodney at Delaware Park; Rapid Proof, winner of the $200,000 Connally Breeders' Cup at Sam Houston Race Park; Sea Dub, winner of the $200,000 Dallas Turf Cup at Lone Star Park; Waupaca; G P Fleet; Mr. Mabee; and A.R. Crackers.

Monday is Dollar Day at Remington, with the cost for general admission, selected soft drinks, and hot dogs all $1.

* Of the six horses in the eighth race Friday night, four are stakes winners: Dusty Spike, George Taylor, Rare Cure, and Zee Oh Six. The one-mile allowance offers an early look at some of the local candidates for the $40,000 Governor's Cup on Nov. 26.

* Remington will run 36 stakes for Quarter Horses next year, and stakes purses could top a record $4 million depending on nominations for races such as the Remington Park Futurity and the Heritage Place Futurity, which could each be worth $750,000. The meet will run 50 days, from March 10 to June 4.
