Race 4 (f-Clm10,000, 3+, 1 1/8)24.2748.671:13.761:39.631:52.88

Comment: Suave dogged pacesetter Iosilver, allowed that runner to edge clear and the closers to come to him going to the far turn, but then burst to the lead into the lane and powered home while setting a track mark. He appears set up for a huge second half of the season. Perfect Drift sat in midpack, moved up strongly with Second of June going to the far turn, then tried to kick again when Suave bounded away but just didn't have enough. Second of June raced with Perfect Drift through the first six furlongs and finished third. Three Hour Nap was pulled up down the backside.

Race 7 (AlwN1X, 3+, 1m)23.3948.211:13.591:39.61

Comment: Angara again proved how she adores non-firm going. Closer than usual to a tepid pace, she steadily moved up going to the far turn, was able to find room between horses, and put in a sustained run that got her there a whisker in front of a few others. Sweet Talker stalked the pace, put her head in front in midstretch, and battled hard to the wire to just miss. Argentina stalked while inside saving ground, had to wait for room coming into the lane, finally found a seam, and pushed through strongly to just miss as well. The top three all ran splendidly. My Typhoon set the modest pace. Favored Lady of Venice stalked in midpack on the outside, moved up to threaten into the lane, but couldn't follow through on her run.

Race 6 (f-MdnSplWt, 2yo, 6f)21.7946.0158.511:11.50

Comment: Pure as Gold, claimed for $100,000 last time and the longest shot in the field, burst out of the gate to prompt the pace along the inside, took over when pacesetter Premium Saltine faded, and had enough to keep the hard-charging Bordonaro and Battle Won at arm's length. He had to survive a jockey's objection, as it appeared his rider's whip struck runner-up Bordonaro across the snout in midstretch. Bordonaro had a great trip stalking the fast pace. He loomed ominously into the lane, checked in midstretch (when seemingly struck by Pure as Gold's rider's whip) but otherwise had no excuse. Battle Won sat in midpack, swung wide for the stretch run, and doggedly kept to his task in a fine effort. Carthage broke slowly and was dull throughout.

Race 8 (WickerrH, 3+, 1m)22.8146.981:10.561:22.641:34.31

Comment: Attima restored some luster to a reputation damaged by a dull run in the Grade 1 American Oaks with a thoroughly professional win here. She jumped right out to set the pace, took pressure from Lake Marina, dispatched that foe into the lane, and had more than enough to keep Sol Mi Fa, Soothsay and Secret Scheme at bay through the lane. Sol Mi Fa stalked the pace and tried to make a run at the winner through the lane. Soothsay sat well back and put in a strong rally to just miss getting second. Secret Scheme likewise was well back early and rallied smartly, missing second by just a head and a nose.

Race 5 (MdnSplWt, 3+, 1 1/8)23.6648.451:13.971:41.041:56.00

Comment: Bernardini, so impressive in the Preakness, bolted right out to the early lead, took pressure from Minister's Bid and Sunriver but dispatched with them with ease, and bounded away under a hand ride. Minister's Bid did all the hard work, trying the pressure the winner all the way. He looked beaten for second when Hemingway's Key went by along the rail, but fought back gamely to get second. Hemingway's Key, well back early, made a nice run into the lane. Sunriver chased the winner but ran up the white flag on the far turn.

Also ran: Take D' Tour(86), Nothing But Fun(80), Oonagh Maccool-IRE(67).

Comment: Spun Sugar stalked the pace while saving ground, moved up easily off the pacesetters' heels, had to wait a bit for room into the lane, burst through between horses, repelled Balletto in a long drive. Balletto bided her time well off the brisk, contested pace, swept into contention with a powerful, wide run, appeared ready to blow by the winner but simply wasn't good enough. Pool Land dueled with Take D' Tour, ran that foe into submission, and took the lead into the lane. Oonagh Maccool stalked alongside Spun Sugar, appeared in a good spot while moving with that foe, but caved in when the real racing began.
