Squallcreek surprises in Everett Nevin

Squallcreek ($37) pulled off a surprise in more ways than one as he won his stakes debut, capturing the $53,200 Everett Nevin Stakes on Sunday at the Alameda County Fair.

Squallcreek seemed destined to finish second in the one mile and 70-yard stakes race for 3-year-olds. He stalked Thiscatsgotcharm, who made the lead easily.

Thiscatsgotcharm, making only his third start and his first try around two turns, opened a three-length lead in the stretch and seemed in command when he suddenly ducked inward, tried to jump the rail near the sixteenth pole, and lost jockey Frank Alvarado, who was uninjured and walked off the track.

Squallcreek, under Luis Martinez, was wide and unaffected by the incident. He kept to his business and won the race by four lengths over Dance Chief in 1:41.59.

Squallcreek, an Archie Chase homebred by Storm Creek owned by Chase and R-Cher Family Farms and trained by Steve Miyadi, earned $30,100 to increase his career earnings to $70,100, with 3 wins in 10 starts.
