Spotlight shines in Lake Placid

Spotlight came home a 3 1/2-length winner over runner-up Mambo Slew in Monday's $150,000 at Saratoga.

Fortunate Damsel finished third, three-quarters of a length behind Mambo Slew, in the seven-horse field of 3-year-old fillies.

The Grade 2 Lake Placid, a 1 1/8-mile grass race, was Spotlight's second race in this country. She won her American debut at Belmont Park on July 23.

Ridden by Jerry Bailey, Spotlight had the measure of pacesetter Fortunate Damsel as she stalked her through comfortable fractions of 24.75 seconds, 50.08, 1:14.34, and 1:38.33. She drew clear inside of the furlong pole.

Spotlight returned $5.10 as the favorite and covered the distance in 1:50.54 over a "good" course.

Christophe Clement trains Spotlight for Green Hills Farm.

"I always liked her, and she was training well," Clement said. "The reason she was sent over here was because she is so anxious. Maybe she will settle into the American routine. She was impressive today."

Clement mentioned the Grade 1 Garden City Breeders' Cup at Belmont Park on Sept. 12 and the Grade 1 Queen Elizabeth Challenge at Keeneland on Oct. 16 as possible spots for Spotlight.
