Spenditallbaby gravitates toward turf

ARCADIA, Calif. - It did not take long for trainer Barry Abrams to choose Friday's $60,000 Hidden Light Stakes on turf over Saturday's $125,000 California Cup Juvenile Fillies for the promising Spenditallbaby.

"I want to run on the turf," Abrams said. "I can run on the dirt all the time. She's better on the turf, I believe."

Spenditallbaby has won 2 of 6 starts, with both wins coming on grass. She beat maidens in her second start on the surface at Del Mar in August and returned to win an allowance race at a mile on turf at Golden Gate Fields on Sept. 9.

Owned by a partnership, Spenditallbaby made two more starts in September, finishing second in the minor Black Swan Stakes at Fairplex Park on Sept. 20 and fourth in the Grade 1 Oak Leaf Stakes on Sept. 30, the opening week of the Oak Tree at Santa Anita meeting.

Abrams was not discouraged by the fourth in the Oak Leaf.

"I thought it was a good race because it was her third race in a month," he said. "It was a fast race."

The Hidden Light Stakes, a prep to the $100,000 Miesque Stakes at Hollywood Park on Nov. 25, has drawn seven 2-year-old fillies and is run at one mile.

Three fillies - Down the Well, Hucking Hot, and Valbenny - are making their first starts in the United States.

Down the Well has never run beyond six furlongs. Now trained by Jim Cassidy, Down the Well was fifth in her stakes debut in May.

Hucking Hot, well-regarded by trainer Jamie Lloyd, has been in the United States since late August. She was third in a minor stakes as a maiden in May and returned to win a maiden race at 7 1/2 furlongs on June 27.

Valbenny beat maidens in her last start, at seven furlongs at Ayr, Scotland, on July 25. She is trained by Paddy Gallagher and has had four recorded works on turf at Santa Anita this month.

Betrluckythangood, Hello Bolly, and Stormin Jo Jo are the other starters. Betrluckythangood won a one-mile maiden race by seven lengths on dirt on Oct. 12 in her second start.

Hello Bolly, who is making her 10th start, won her turf debut in a five-furlong maiden race at Hollywood Park on July 13, beating a field that included Spenditallbaby.

Stormin Jo Jo, coupled with Betrluckythangood in the wagering, is facing winners for the first time. She won a maiden race at Golden Gate Fields on Sept. 6.
