Speedy invader tough

Southern California shipper Miss Silver Image, who has displayed high speed on a synthetic surface and on turf this season, will attempt to transfer that form to a dirt track when she faces New York-breds for the first time Saturday in the $50,000 Arctic Queen Handicap at Finger Lakes.

The six-furlong stakes for statebred fillies and mares drew just five entries, and the 5-year-old Miss Silver Image is the only pure front-runner among them.

Now in the barn of Michael Lecesse, Miss Silver Image has been off for two months since posting back-to-back Beyer Figures of 90 beating claimers at Hollywood Park.

Although she didn't run well in her only start on dirt this season, Miss Silver Image won her maiden race on dirt by leading wire to wire and showed an affinity for the Finger Lakes dirt with a best-of-32 four-furlong move from the gate in 47.80 seconds on July 17.

Gold Like U, the heavy morning line favorite at 7-5, will also be making her Finger Lakes debut. Claimed out of a win for $40,000 two starts ago by trainer Gary Contessa, Gold Like U will be coming back just nine days after briefly showing speed and fading in a restricted stakes at Saratoga.

Watral's Dahlia, who needs a fast pace to set up her closing kick, was third in this race last year and comes in off a recent win in an overnight handicap.
