Speed galore in Schaefer

Email

ANDERSON, Ind. - Private Horde invades from his Kentucky base on Saturday for the $100,000-added Michael G. Schaefer Mile Stakes, Hoosier Park's only open-company stakes for older horses.

Trained by Joe Cain, Private Horde will try to carry his speed a mile in a 10-horse field heavy on front-runners. His two wins this year include the Forego Stakes at Turfway Park in February and an overnight turf handicap at Indiana Downs in May. His most recent effort was a second, beaten a nose by Pro Prado, in an allowance at Keeneland going 6 1/2 furlongs on Oct. 23. John McKee will ride from post 5.

Private Horde brings an impressive bankroll of over $700,000 into the Schaefer but will face solid front-running speed from Iosilver and No Tolerance, both of whom ship in from Chicago. Both horses have two-race win streaks going long against optional claiming company. Iosilver, trained by Chris Block, will break from post 2 under Eddie Razo Jr., and No Tolerance, trained by Mike Campbell, will break from post 3 under Jesse Campbell.

David Vance has entered Pass Rush, who is cross-entered in the $40,000 To Much Coffee Stakes here Sunday. An Indiana-bred, Pass Rush drew post 10 and has Terry Thompson named to ride. The pace of the Schaefer could set up for a stalker like Pass Rush, who has career earnings of nearly $550,000.

Frank Kirby will send out Stormy Impact, a solid stalking horse who is looking to regain his winning ways. Stormy Impact took the Sarco Stakes at Hawthorne this spring, then shipped to Fonner Park in Nebraska to capture the Bosselman/Gus Fonner Stakes. His last win came in July at Arlington Park in the Dr. Fager Stakes, and he has not been out since a dull effort in the Turfway Park Fall Championship on Oct. 1. Tim Thornton has a return ride from post 4.

The Schaefer Mile is the ninth race on a 12-race card that also features the $40,000 Frances Slocum Stakes for Indiana-bred fillies and mares at 1 1/16 miles. Lady Blue Sky, trained by Scott Lake, will again face Ellens Lucky Star in the Slocum, race 11.
